  • Shirley Paden Classes

What a wonderful time we had with Shirley Paden!  She started us off Friday at the finishing class with lots of amazing techniques.  Not just finishing techniques, but great stuff about the various properties of different cast-ons, selvages, and more.  (She has one class just about casting on - some twenty different methods!)  Her handouts were wonderful with info on blocking, fiber care, and details to help us remember everything she taught.  It was hotter than a fire-cracker that Friday, and she'd been traveling since early in the morning, but she was gracious and energetic.

Saturday we were in the Avenmar clubhouse for a full day on design.  This was a very intense session with another huge package of handouts.  We began by watching Shirley's video bio and then we all measured each other, as talked about how those measurements translate into garment sizes and shapes.  Shirley focused on the nuts and bolts of actually creating the garment you envision.  She unraveled the thorny process of translating stitch and row gauge, increasing, and decreasing, into actual garment shape.

After lunch we spent some time looking at the gorgeous garments made from the patterns in Shirley's book.

At the end, everyone had an opportunity to share their garment concept, through sketch and swatch, and get Shirley's input on their designs.

Shirley was really great about chatting informally with us and letting everyone get pictures.

I wish I could knit half as good as you guys! I don’t really know how to knit, but I want to learn! I found this website while browsing for stores that offer knitting classes. The yarn available here is beautiful! I’m thinking about buying some. It’s definitely the ideal knitting shop!
