As my son Colton was finishing up his physics homework at the kitchen counter Sunday morning, he said, "You know Mom, there are kids in my physics class who look at these problems - and well, the problems do look hard and complicated -- and it's overwhelming, and they just say screw it and don't do them. " He added, "When you start doing the problems, they're not really more

A textile artist who wove on a loom built by the legendary craftsman, Daedalus, Circe is best known as the witch who lured sailors to her shores and turned them into swine. In more

There's a beautiful scene in the book Love in Ruin when the protagonist, Marty, a gutsy journalist visits a prisoner of war camp in Finland. There is death and devastation all around. The prisoners, so young and naive, seem not even to know what they are fighting for. The guards, although they have a job to do, empathize deeply with the plight of their captives. As the day closes, Marty, the guards, and her guide draw together in their temporary quarters. more

I've been really stressed lately. All the stuff. New product launches, classes, retreats, events, social media, and more. It's all good, and I'm super excited about it, but life has felt a little overwhelming. And then there's the not more

I've been thinking about last week's newsletter, and Katie's comment about how good judgment comes from experience and experience comes from bad judgment. In addition to being a good laugh, it's powerfully true, but it's important more

Mary has found a lovely new shawl for her next knitalong. This really is a lovely pattern, and the designer certainly has an eye and a sense of style, not to mention a great photographer. But like so many newish designers, she's got a beautiful picture and a set of basic instructions, but the specifics are kind of missing. For instance, she gives the needle size she used but not the gauge she got with more

We're all quick to undervalue what we're good at, taking for granted our unique set of skills and characteristics. I thought about this while my son, Johnny, was home for the day Sunday. We were not at all sure where he would find his more

A few weeks ago I had what I thought was a no-big-deal health issue. I went to the doctor, and all of a sudden I need a biopsy. Wait. What? I'm not a medical professional by any stretch, but even a layman like me knows that biopsy is another way of saying, Hey, you might have cancer. So I submitted to the procedure, and went home to do what any right thinking person does after more

We're back from the weekend retreat to Winchester. We had eight brand new retreat attendees, two mother/daughter sets, one mother-in-law/daughter-in-law pair, and return friends who came from as far away as Boston and Florida for the weekend! It's a lovely little mini vacation at a lovely venue with great food, but the most fun part is simply being together with other knitters. No matter how happy you are in your marriage or relationship, there's no substitute for your girlfriends, and for knitters, that's doubly true. Only another knitter will understand some of the seemingly irrational decisions we make - like going 20, 30, or even 60 miles out of more
