We scheduled the winter retreat sometime last fall - I wanted to get the speaker, hotel, and restaurant lined up. I like to have something to look forward to after the holidays - plus it's a quiet time in need of a little excitement.  Or so I thought.  Enter Vogue Knitting Live and suddenly a quiet January and February turned into weeks of me with my hair on fire.

It's okay.  Or, it will be, I guess.  It's been a whirlwind - a steep learning curve in a world I know nothing about. I mean, sure, I know knitting, and I've been selling the product for going on two decades now, but vending at a trade show? Uh. No. First, it's in a scary place called New York where this little country mouse has only ever been a couple of times.  And even if it were in DC, there are so many things to know.  Like what you need to take and how you get it there.  We're hauling a literal ton of stuff in the car, but there's so much more to it.  You pay for a booth but everything in it, except for the trash can, is extra.  It honestly feels like I'm outfitting for a Denali expedition with no Sherpa.

Trisha Malcolm and Linda Pratt from Rowan have been amazing, but even so, there's just a lot to navigate.  They can guide me, but they can't do it for me.  I have a lot to learn, and I'm terrified of making an unrecoverable mistake.

Your first trip to the yarn shop can feel exactly like this.  So much stuff.  How do I figure out what I need and how much?  And the voice in the back of our mind thinking, "This is going to be so expensive.--I really don't want to screw it up."  It's a different world with a whole new vocabulary.

I get it.  I truly do.  Doing something new and big is scary, but sometimes you just have to do it.  You hope there's a friendly person who'll advise and guide you, but they can't do it for you.  It's the doing where the learning happens. And we have to start before we're ready.

Michael, Gilda and many others have told me I should do this show, but It's always been too scary, but it's not like it was going to get less scary with each passing year.  Scary things only get less scary when you actually do them--when you dive in and try, make mistakes, learn, and try again.

Whether it's your first stitch. your first sweater, or your first show.  Do the scary thing.  It won't be nearly so scary next time.

Warmly,

Ellen

p.s. Would love to hear your thoughts.  What's the scariest thing you've done?

Ellen

My very first day as a new nurse on my own….and I was a Critical Care Nurse in the Unit. I truly felt like I knew nothing and either my patient would die or I would. We both survived and that was many, many years ago. It has helped me get through many things over the years. The adage is true, “What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.” You’ll be on the otherside of it before you know it, Ellen.

Ellen, you have this. I do many shows throughout the year and have anxiety with all of them. I dream of how I will set up and try to do something new each time. Your personality, enthusiasm and product will make this a successful event. Take pictures and post. Enjoy and have fun. They are so much work but you will enjoy the people. Have a great event. You got this!!

My scary thing: I spoke at a public county commissioners’ meeting, which felt pretty intimidating, but ended up being fine and helped to bring a much-needed change to county government. Who knew?!
Be yourself (everyone else is taken) and your amazing knowledge, skill and enthusiasm for what you do will shine through! I wish you tons of success in NYC and look forward to hearing about your adventure.

The scariest thing I did was to address my association meeting for the first time as their president. To stand in front of all those people, and wonder if I was going to be able to make myself heard, make sense, and lead the meeting correctly was almost heart stopping. I found a friendly face that smiled at me and all went well from there! I’m sure you will do fine, remember most everyone there will be in the same boat even if they have been before each year is a bit different!❤️

Is there a scary thing after starting and running your own business? Knitting something different can be daunting but only because we want it to look perfect!!!

A family medical emergency last spring left us all in the position of facing an unknowable outcome. We all understood that success would be a result of ‘all the things’ working together! Everyone did what they knew had to be done … and it was a success. Now, in hind sight, we are all ever grateful. Can’t wait for you, Ellen, to share the wonderful experiences ahead at VKL!!! Your warmth and charm will be such a success! Go team CFE🙌🏻

Ellen, you’re going to do great! You’ve done some absolutely incredible things in your life, and this is going to be the latest. I can’t wait to hear all the fun stories about your adventure in the Big Apple. Take a huge bite, and enjoy.

Ellen, ur enthusiasm and mentoring in the fiber community is so wonderful and needed. U now have a loyal friend for my knitting adventure. I’ve not had any YLS owner communicate a desire to help this novice knitter. How can I b scared when I can just communicate with u. When I talk w anyone about knitting I’m referring them to u. U r our guiding star. Many thanks

The scariest thing I ever did was to move to Austria without speaking a word of German and with just my violin in hand! Within 6 months I was fluent in the language and supporting myself and my husband playing the Viennese Balls etc.
At this moment my most terrifying knitting moment is upon me: I must learn to cable and it scares me to death!
I sincerely believe your foray into New York and Vogue Live will go splendidly. Even if there are bumps and bruises you will be that much more prepared for the next one!

Warm regards,

Julia R.

My word of the year is “forward”. After choosing it I am loving its positive daily message. Admitting that I must add that the scary thing I have continued to ignore is knitting a sweater. Meeting you last November and watching you on Rowan Live I am confident that you will help me move forward into sweater knitting.
YOLO…you only live once. You are remarkable! Go team Rowan.
